FAQ
Is Expenity free?#
Yes, and it is open source. There are no ads and no paid tiers today.
Does it work on my iPhone, Android phone, tablet and computer?#
Yes. It is a web app that runs in any modern browser, and you can add it to your home screen like an app: see Install on your device. Sign in with the same account on each device and your data follows you.
Do I need an account?#
You can try Expenity without one, and your data then stays in that browser only. An account (created with a passkey, no password) gives you sync between devices, a backup in case you lose a device, and shared wallets. See Account and sync.
What is a passkey?#
Your fingerprint, face or device PIN, used instead of a password. Your device keeps the secret; Expenity only stores a public key. If you lose your passkeys, the recovery codes you saved at sign-up get you back in.
I lost my passkey and my recovery codes.#
Email verification is not switched on yet, so there is no other way in. This is the trade-off of having no passwords. Save your recovery codes when you create the account, and add a second passkey on another device in More → Account and sync.
Will it remind me when the app is closed?#
Yes. With an account, turn on notifications in More → Reminders and calendar and Expenity sends one summary a day, at the hour you choose, even when the app is closed. On iPhone and iPad it needs the app added to the Home Screen. Without an account, download the calendar file and import it into your calendar. See Reminders.
Why not just connect to my bank?#
Reading a bank account would make Expenity handle bank credentials and sensitive data, which we would rather avoid. You tell it what you spend and earn; it tells you where it goes.
What happens if I clear my browser data?#
You are signed out and the data stored on that device is removed. With an account, sign in again with your passkey and everything syncs back. Without an account, clearing the data deletes it for good, so back up first. See Account and sync.
Where is my data stored? Can you read it?#
On your device, and, if you have an account, on Expenity's server (Cloudflare) so it can sync. The connection is encrypted and only your passkey opens your account. Expenity does not look at your data, sell it or share it. See Privacy and your data.
Can several people share a wallet?#
Yes. Share a wallet with an invite code or link and choose whether people can edit or only view. See Shared wallets.
Does it support Greek?#
Yes. Choose the language on the welcome screen, or in More → Appearance and language. The app, this help center and the website are in English and Greek, and the sentence box understands both. The Greek text is still being reviewed by a native speaker: please tell us what to improve.
Which currencies?#
Any currency by its three-letter code. A wallet has one currency, and totals are converted to your main currency with daily European Central Bank rates, marked with ≈. See Wallets and currencies.
Is the advice in "Ideas" financial advice?#
No. Ideas are simple observations about your own data, such as "this subscription costs €192 a year". Decide for yourself.
The sentence box got something wrong.#
It is a helper. Correct the fields below it. If you have a sentence that should work, please open an issue with the exact text.
How do I report a bug or suggest something?#
On GitHub.
What is new?#
How do I get help while using a screen? Tap the pulsing ? at the top. It opens an animated tutorial in a popup. See Tutorials and help.
Can I hide features I do not use? Yes. Pick Basic, Pro, Advanced or build your own on the Features page. See Features and plans.
I started an expense and lost it. Look on Home or in More, Drafts. See Search, filters, drafts and recently deleted.
I deleted something by mistake. More, Recently deleted keeps it for 30 days.
How do I send feedback or report a problem? More, Help & about, Contact us. See Contact us.
Which devices does Expenity work on? iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, Windows, Mac and Linux, in a current browser, with nothing to download. You can install it from the browser so it opens like an app. See Install on your device.
