Reminders
Expenity can remind you in three ways. The first one works like a normal app: a notification arrives even when Expenity is closed.
1. Notifications when the app is closed#
With an account, Expenity sends you one summary a day at the hour you choose, listing the bills that are due soon or overdue. It arrives like any app notification, on the lock screen, even if Expenity is not open.
- Sign in (an account is needed, because Expenity has to know which bills are due).
- Open More → Reminders and calendar → Notifications on this device and press Turn on. Allow notifications when your browser asks.
- Choose the time you want it. Send a test shows you what it looks like.
Things to know:
- iPhone and iPad: Apple only allows this for apps added to the Home Screen. Add Expenity first (Install on your device), open it from there, then turn notifications on.
- Each device is separate. Turn it on on every phone or computer where you want it.
- Update notifications. When a new version of Expenity is published, every device with notifications on gets one notification: Expenity update available. Tap it and Expenity opens with the new version's notes and an Update now button. A device is told once per version, and not at all if it already runs the latest. To stop these, turn off Notify me about updates in the same card.
- Bills you marked as paid or snoozed are left out, and so are bills outside their reminder window (Default reminder, or the Remind me field on a bill). Bills in a shared wallet are included.
- To stop, press Turn off, or block notifications for the site in your browser settings.
- Expenity stores the address your browser gives it for sending notifications, your time zone and the chosen hour. See Privacy and your data.
Real-life example
Nikos turns on reminders for 9:00. On the morning a bill is due, a notification tells him, even if he has not opened the app for days.
2. Your calendar (works without an account)#
This is the reminder to rely on.
- Open More → Reminders and calendar.
- Press Download calendar file.
- Import the file into your calendar app.
The file holds every open bill (not recurring income or budgets) as an all-day event, with its repeat rule and two alarms: at 09:00 on the reminder day you chose, and at 09:00 on the due day. Your calendar app then does the reminding on every device where that calendar syncs.
How to import:
- Google Calendar (on a computer): Settings → Import & export → Import, choose the file.
- Apple Calendar: open the file, or File → Import, and choose a calendar.
- Outlook: File → Open & Export → Import/Export → Import an iCalendar (.ics) file.
Things to know:
- The file is a snapshot. When you add or change bills, download it again. Importing again may create duplicates of events, so remove the earlier import first.
- Marking a bill paid in Expenity does not change the calendar. For a repeating bill that is fine, because the next due date is already in the repeat.
- Reminders arrive however your calendar delivers them: notification, sound or email, as you set it up there.
Real-life example
Anna adds her bills to her phone calendar. She needs no account, and the alarms work on every device that calendar syncs to.
3. Notifications while Expenity is open#
In More → Reminders and calendar → Notifications while Expenity is open, press Turn on and allow notifications when your browser asks. When you open Expenity or keep it in a tab, you get one notification a day for bills that are due within their reminder window and are not snoozed.
This does not work when the app is fully closed. For that, use notifications when the app is closed (above) or the calendar file.
Choose how early#
In More → Reminders and calendar choose the Default reminder, from the day itself up to two weeks before. Each bill can override it in the Remind me field.
Real-life example
Rent matters most, so Maria asks to be reminded five days ahead for it and one day ahead for everything else.
Snooze#
In a bill's ⋯ menu, Snooze to tomorrow or Snooze 3 days stops its notifications for a while.
Real-life example
Petros cannot pay today, so he snoozes the reminder until Friday and it comes back then.
What is coming#
Email reminders need a sending domain and are planned. Notifications on the lock screen and the calendar file cover the same need today.
